COACHING/MANAGING CAREER

Is in his first season as the D-backs' hitting coach after serving in the same capacity with the Brewers for 4 seasons (2015-18) ... it was his second stint in Milwaukee's organization, having previously served as Minor League hitting coordinator (2010-11) and manager at Double-A Huntsville (2012-13) ... Was the Tigers' assistant hitting coach in 2014, his first coaching position at the Major League level ... Detroit led the Majors in average (.277) and ranked second in runs (757), OBP (.331), slugging pct. (.426) and OPS (.757) ... Spent 4 years in the Nationals' organization (2006-09), serving as Minor League roving hitting instructor (2006), manager at Short-Season A Vermont (2007) and Single-A Hagerstown (2008), and hitting coach at Triple-A Syracuse (2009) ... Began his coaching career as the Minor League hitting coordinator with the Mariners in 2000.

In his final season with the Brewers, helped guide NL Most Valuable Player Christian Yelich to the first batting title in franchise history (.326), as well as leading the league in slugging percentage (.598), OPS (1.000) and total bases (343) ... Milwaukee featured 2 players in the Top 5 in the NL in each Triple Crown category (average/home runs/RBI) ) [Christian Yelich .326 AVG/36 HR/110 RBI, Jesus Aguilar 35 HR/108 RBI, Lorenzo Cain .308 AVG], making them 1 of 2 teams in the last 35 years to do so, joining the 1992 San Diego Padres ... The Brewers were the only team in the Majors to boast 3 30-homer players in each of the last 2 seasons, and the first to do so in back-to-back seasons since the 2008-09 Philadelphia Phillies ... Milwaukee posted 2 of its Top 3 single-season home run totals in franchise history in the last 2 seasons under Coles' guidance (2nd in 2017, 224; 3rd in 2018, 218).

PLAYING CAREER

Played 14 Major League seasons with the Mariners (1983-85, '88-90), Tigers (1986-87, '90), Pirates (1987-88), Giants (1991), Reds (1992), Blue Jays (1993-94), Cardinals (1995) and Rockies (1997) ... Was a member of the 1993 World Champion Toronto Blue Jays ... Is 1 of 15 players all-time, including Babe Ruth, to hit 3 homers in a game in both the NL (1987 Pirates) and AL (1994 Blue Jays) ... Finished his career playing for Chunichi Dragons (1996) and Hanshin Tigers (1997) of the Japanese Central League.

Married to Shari ... has 3 children: DeAnna, Darnell Jr. and Jared ... Is a 1980 graduate from Eisenhower High School in Rialto, Calif. ... committed to UCLA to play baseball and football before signing with the Mariners ... Worked with ESPN from 2001-06 as an analyst covering the Major Leagues, college baseball and the Little League World Series ... Remains close friends with former teammate Ken Griffey Jr., who thanked him in his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2016 ... While Coles was coaching for Countryside (Fla.) High School in 2010, Griffey outfitted the entire team with 2 pairs of shoes and batting gloves.
