Is in his sixth season as the D-backs' first base coach and 36th overall in the Major Leagues, including his 24th straight at first base ... also specializes in outfield and baserunning instruction. . Served as first base coach on 3 World Series championship clubs: 1989 A's and 2006 and '11 Cardinals ... Spent 2 seasons as first base coach with the Cubs (2012-13) where he also served as the club's outfield coach credited with Alfonso Soriano's defensive improvement in left field, going from a .961 fielding percentage in 382 games from 2009-11 to .986 from the start of 2012 until his trade to the Yankees on July 26, 2012 ... On Tony La Russa's coaching staff for 27 seasons (1984-2011), including 16 straight at first base with the A's (1989-95) and Cardinals (1996-2011) ... Began his coaching career as a player-coach in Oakland's Minor League system in 1983 ... The D-backs (76.0 in 2018, 77.4 in 2017, 81.5 in 2016, 75.0 in '15) and the Indians (78.9 in 2018, 79.3 in 2017, 81.2 in 2016, 75.4 in '15) are the only 2 teams in the Majors with a stolen base pct. of 75.0 or better in each of the last 4 seasons ... Arizona ranked second in the Majors in stolen-base pct. each of the last 2 seasons and is sixth in stolen bases (319) since 2016.


Appeared in 645 games with the Twins (1975-76), Blue Jays (1977-79) and A's (1980-82) ... Made his Major League debut on Aug. 22, 1975 vs. Tigers and homered in his first career at-bat (off Vern Ruhle) ... hit safely in 21 of his first 22 games ... Selected by the Blue Jays in the fifth round (49th overall) of the 1976 Expansion Draft ... Played in 6 postseason games with the A's in 1981 ... hit a solo homer in Game 3 of the ALDS vs. Royals (off Larry Gura) ... Signed by the Twins as a free agent on June 20, 1971 ... Did not play baseball in high school ... Was the first Canadian-born player to appear with Toronto, going 2-for-4 with a RBI in the club's inaugural game on April 7, 1977 vs. White Sox.


Married to Lene…son, Cody, played 10 Minor League seasons and appeared in 37 games with Oakland (2002) and St. Louis (2004) ... Inducted into the Canadian National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
