GM: No decision yet on draft

PHOENIX -- Diamondbacks general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. said Saturday the club is still having internal discussions about who to select with the No. 1 pick in next week's First-Year Player Draft.

Baseball America reported Friday that two baseball sources told them that the Diamondbacks will use the pick on Virginia high school shortstop Justin Upton. Then Saturday, The East Valley Tribune also said Arizona would select Upton and cited "a source with knowledge of the situation."

That was news to Garagiola, who was involved in draft meetings with scouting director Mike Rizzo and his staff throughout the day at Bank One Ballpark.

"I'm sitting here with (Rizzo) and I can tell you that we're still having discussions about who we should take and haven't made any decisions," Garagiola said. "I don't know who the source with knowledge would be."

Upton is widely considered to be the top position player available in the draft and the Diamondbacks could very well select him when the draft starts Tuesday. But as of Saturday, they were still considering college pitchers Mike Pelfrey, Luke Hochevar and Craig Hansen.

"Do we like Justin Upton a lot?" Garagiola asked. "Could we take him with the first pick? Yes. But we also like the college pitchers and could just as easily take one of them."

Despite Upton's obvious talent, the Diamondbacks are likely tempted by the pitchers given the state of their farm system, which is deeper in position players than it is in pitching.

The organization is loaded at the shortstop position in the Minor Leagues. Sergio Santos, their top overall pick three years ago, is at Triple-A Tucson and the club reached an agreement last week with their No. 1 pick from last year, Florida State University shortstop Stephen Drew.

"The decision on the No. 1 pick will be independent of the Stephen Drew deal," Rizzo wrote Friday in a first-person column for MLB.com. "But we'll look realistically where our depth is and where we are a little lean and then we'll make the pick accordingly."
