It was the latter emotion that D-backs interim manager Kirk Gibson felt when the right-hander came on in relief during Wednesday's 7-5 loss and allowed the Reds to pick up an insurance run when he allowed a double and hit a batter to force in a run.
Right after that he easily fanned slugger Jay Bruce to end the inning.
"When he finds his arm slot, he's got great stuff, but sometimes it takes him a while to find it," Gibson said. "He's gone through stretches where he's done very well."
But when you come into a game as a reliever, you don't often have time to ease your way into things.
"When you come into a game, it's time," Gibson said. "That's something he's going to have to figure out to stick, really."
