Dodgers assistant GMs Logan White and De Jon Watson, along with Angels scouting director Eddie Bane, have been told that they are no longer in the running. The team held interviews with the candidates last week.
Dipoto was given the job on an interim basis following the dismissal of Josh Byrnes on July 1. Since that time he has impressed the organization's hierarchy with the trades he has made.
Through a series of moves prior to the Trade Deadline, Dipoto was able to reduce the team's salary obligations for next season while restocking the farm system. That, as well as how well he has worked with team president and CEO Derrick Hall, made a him a front-runner.
Towers, who was the GM in San Diego for 14 years before being dismissed last year, is well respected throughout the game for his talent-evaluation skills. The Padres' bullpen, which has been so successful this year, was largely put together by Towers.
The team is expected to have a decision this week.
