Padres at the plate: Kevin Kouzmanoff continued his hot spring with three hits in three at-bats. Pete Laforest picked up an infield single in the third inning off Randy Johnson and drove in the Padres' first run with a single to right in the fifth off Micah Owings.

D-backs at the plate: Scott Hairston, who hit three home runs Tuesday, singled and walked in his first two at-bats. Orlando Hudson singled, walked and singled again in his first three at-bats. Chad Tracy doubled home Hudson in the fifth.

Padres on the mound: Mike Thompson pitched himself into and out of jams in the early going. Thompson allowed seven baserunners in his four innings, but did not allow any to score. Thompson was helped by a pair of double plays.

D-backs on the mound: Johnson was impressive in his first Cactus League "A" game of the spring. The Big Unit allowed just two hits in three scoreless innings. He didn't walk a batter and fanned five. He threw 38 pitches, 28 for strikes.

Cactus League records: Padres 15-11-1; D-backs 18-12.

Up next: The two teams square off again Friday afternoon at the Peoria Sports Complex. Edgar Gonzalez, who was named the No. 4 starter a couple of days ago, will make his final spring start against San Diego's Chris Young. Brandon Lyon, Juan Cruz and Brandon Medders are also scheduled to pitch for the D-backs.
