Melvin honored by Sporting News

DENVER -- Bob Melvin secured the first of what could be many postseason awards Monday when he was named National League Manager of the Year by The Sporting News.

The award was voted on by Melvin's fellow NL managers. The third-year skipper received six votes, while Phillies manager Charlie Manuel finished second with five.

"Obviously, because of the fact that it's voted on by the managers, it's an honor, but for me it ends up being a group award," said Melvin, who led the D-backs to a 90-72 record and the NL West title this year. "You've got to have good players, which we do. We've got a great coaching staff that prepares the players to play every day, so it's a credit to them. And [we have] a front office that gives us the right tools and the right players to be successful with. So it ends up being a group award."

Melvin's players were happy when they heard the news.

"That's great," second baseman Orlando Hudson said. "He deserves it. He's a heck of a manager and a heck of a guy. He's my favorite. I love playing for this man. You can't help but play relaxed for him. He's our leader, and he deserves that award."

Said veteran first baseman Tony Clark, "It's well deserved. His X and O ability is above par, but his asset is his communication. The atmosphere he created here is the biggest reason we've been as successful as we have been. I'm hopeful that moving forward this is just going to be one of the many awards he wins this offseason."

Melvin was hired prior to the 2005 season and has developed a good working relationship with Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes, who was named to his post one year later.

"This is a well-deserved honor," Byrnes said. "Bob has done a remarkable job using the entire roster and creating belief within our clubhouse."

Melvin owns a 243-243 record with the D-backs and a 399-411 mark overall, which includes two seasons as Mariners manager.
