D-backs re-sign Bloomquist through 2013
The D-backs have agreed to terms with infielder/outfielder Willie Bloomquist on a two-year contract, general manager Kevin Towers announced on Wednesday.

Bloomquist declined his $1.1 million option at the end of this past season, electing to become a free agent with hopes of negotiating a bigger contract. His new deal is worth a reported $3.8 million.

The versatile 33-year-old Bloomquist hit .266 with a .657 on-base plus slugging percentage in 97 games for the D-backs in 2011, appearing in a career-high 59 games at shortstop, 25 games in left field and one game at second base. He became the starting shortstop when Stephen Drew went down for the season with a broken right ankle in July.

If Drew returns from his injury to start the 2012 season, Bloomquist will likely assume a utility role off the bench. For his career, Bloomquist is a .264 hitter with a .654 OPS and 124 stolen bases.

Bloomquist's five errors in 2011 were the second fewest among National League shortstops, and his 20 stolen bases were the second most of his career. During his 10-year Major League career, Bloomquist has manned every position except pitcher and catcher.
