Wieland, ranked as one of the Padres' top prospects, was impressive in four innings of work. The right-hander, who was making his second appearance and first start of the spring, allowed just two hits and struck out four.Wieland was scheduled to go three innings, but manager Bud Black surprised him by saying he could go one more.
The game was scoreless until the sixth when San Diego's Chase Headley led off with a home run to right.
Both the homers came off reliever Takashi Saito. One of the reasons Padres manager Bud Black elected to play Quentin in the game vs. the D-backs rather than in the split-squad contest against the Reds is he wanted him to get a look at the division rival's pitching staff.Things got tense in the seventh when D-backs right-hander David Hernandez plunked Will Venable with a pitch. Home-plate umpire Alan Porter immediately issued a warning to both benches. Earlier in the game, D-backs outfielder Justin Upton was hit by a pitch.
The Padres capitalized on two errors in the ninth in putting up six more runs. Blake Tekotte had a two-run double and Nathan Freiman hit a two-run homer.Left-hander Patrick Corbin started for the D-backs. Corbin allowed three hits and fanned three in three scoreless innings.
Arizona's top prospect Trevor Bauer, came on in relief of Corbin and worked a pair of innings, allowing one hit and a walk while fanning three.
In an interesting twist, Bauer, who is used to starting games, went through his normal pregame routine and threw simulated innings in the bullpen while Corbin pitched.Up next for D-backs: The D-backs travel to Mesa to take on the Cubs on Thursday at 1:05 MST with Opening Day starter Ian Kennedy set to take the mound. Kennedy has been battling flu like symptoms for the past week and allowed four runs in his last start. Barry Enright is also expected to pitch for the D-backs.
