In seven appearances since then, he has a 12.15 ERA. It's unclear whether health played a part in those outings, because the forearm issue only recently came to light.
"I think it was after his last outing," Melvin said referring to his outing Tuesday in San Diego. "He felt it a little bit then. We had him checked out and there was nothing structurally wrong, so it will be a day-to-day proposition with him."
ARI: RHP Dan Haren (14-6, 3.10 ERA)
Haren pitched well against the Padres his last time out. The right-hander allowed two runs on nine hits over seven innings. He struck out a season-high 11, the third time in his career that he has reached double digits in strikeouts. While he gave up plenty of hits, Haren was able to pitch out of jams adjusted from his previous start against the Padres, when they jumped on him for three runs in the first inning.
LAD: RHP Chad Billingsley (12-10, 3.15 ERA)
Billingsley tossed another quality start on Monday in Philadelphia, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings despite struggling at times with his control, as he walked five (two intentional) and ran up a pitch count of 107. Still, the outing accounted for his ninth consecutive start in which he's yielded three runs or less, and he's compiled a 3.04 ERA in that time. Billingsley has struggled against the D-backs this year, going 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA.
Outfielder Alex Romero was the player sent down to make room for Justin Upton coming off the disabled list because he still had Minor League options. Had the club elected to try to send out Jeff Salazar it would have risked losing him. "[Romero] was the only guy that really we could do that with," Melvin said. "And for a three- or four-day period, it will give him the opportunity to get some at-bats." Romero figures to be back after the rosters expand on Sept. 1. ... The D-backs have had 10 players on the disabled list this year. ... Wil Ledezma, claimed on waivers from the Padres on Friday, will wear No. 46.
