Towers keeps open mind on all players at Deadline
PHOENIX -- Would the D-backs really consider listening to offers for outfielder Justin Upton?

According to general manager Kevin Towers, there is no player on the roster he won't talk about. That doesn't mean, however, that Upton is going anywhere.

A FOXSports.com report said that the D-backs would "consider offers" for Upton if the team fell out of contention before the July 31 Trade Deadline.

Upton, who entered Friday hitting .266 with seven homers and 34 RBIs, has been the target of some booing at Chase Field lately.

"It's the same way I answered it in 2010 when I got here," said Towers, who created a stir at the 2010 General Managers Meetings when he said he would listen to offers for Upton. "I'm open-minded on anybody, everybody. Even guys who have no-trade clauses. You ask people when I was in San Diego, same exact response. I think you always have to be open-minded."

Towers, who spent 14 years as GM of the Padres, said he even listened to offers for San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman during his tenure there.

"If people are untouchable, how do you ever gather info?" Towers said. "There are a lot of GMs who are like that -- they won't talk about a guy. Well, who knows, somebody may value the guy way more than you do, and my job is to continue to make this organization better going forward.

"So if you put everybody off limits, nobody is going to call you. So at least you find out value on your players and how others value them. I take the same approach every single year. If they want to speculate as to who might be available that's up to them."

With his team struggling to put together a sustained push for the top of the National League West, Towers is willing to look at all options to provide a spark.

"Certainly there's certain guys that are going to be harder to move than anybody," Towers said. "But I'm open-minded on everybody."
