PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) announced that the inaugural Race Against Cancer, presented by Dignity Health and University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix, will take place on the morning of February 9, 2013. The race will start at Chase Field, take place in the streets of downtown Phoenix and finish back at Chase Field with proceeds benefitting the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation.
“We have all been affected by cancer and our entire D-backs family is committed to assisting non-profit organizations in our community who support those dealing with the disease,” said D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall (@DHallDbacks). “We are proud to partner with Dignity Health and the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix who have developed a unique model that delivers innovative solutions in a patient-centered environment. We hope and believe we can all make a real difference and save lives.”
The Race Against Cancer will begin and end at Chase Field, winding through the Legends Entertainment District (@LegendsDistrict) and Downtown Phoenix. More than 5,000 runners are expected to take part in the inaugural 5K run while more than 1,000 families will participate in the 1K Family Fun walk.
Each participant will be able to continue their day at the Subway D-backs FanFest, which attracted 25,000 fans last season.
Runners and walkers will have access to an interactive Wellness Zone, complete with the D-backs partners and non-profit organizations that will provide the latest information on nutrition, exercise, and screening. In addition, race participants will receive an exclusive D-backs racing shirt and unique finisher medal.
The race was developed to become a voice for all D-backs fans that have been affected by this disease. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and will be distributed to Arizona non-profits that provide screening, treatment and support for those dealing with cancer.
