Bloomquist aims to increase comfort level in outfield

|

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The first fly ball Willie Bloomquist saw in the outfield Monday was hit hard and right into the sun.

Bloomquist turned the wrong way, turned back again and the ball fell in over his head for a double.

"The sun was kind of tough out there on the first ball," he said. "I think there's a pretty good chance I catch it, if I can see it. It's one of those balls where there's really not much you can do. I didn't go back on it all that great, but I still think I can make that catch, if I see it. But that's all part of being out there and part of getting out there in spring and getting those kinks out there early."

Last season, Bloomquist was in an infield position in all all but two games. He played one game in left and one in right, and did not get a fly ball hit to him.

This year, Bloomquist could see more time in the outfield -- he's played 322 games there in his career -- and even more immediately as a member of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

"That's not an easy one," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said of the ball that fell. "That's one of the reasons we put him out there -- so he gets some comfort. Next time he'll be more comfortable out there."
