SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Coming into Spring Training, it seemed Joe Paterson did not have much of a chance to make the D-backs' Opening Day roster.

Paterson still faces an uphill battle, but the left-hander received a ringing endorsement from Arizona manager Kirk Gibson on Wednesday.

"We're really happy with the way he's throwing and what he's done this [spring]," Gibson said. "He's got the greatest attitude on the team, too. I have confidence in what he's doing now."

With a scoreless inning of work Wednesday night, Paterson has allowed just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings (1.35 ERA) this spring.

Gibson had a lot of confidence in Paterson in 2011 when he was the D-backs' left-handed specialist and compiled a 2.91 ERA in 62 appearances.

Last year, though, Paterson struggled with his command and in six games compiled a 37.12 ERA and was sent to Triple-A Reno where he spent the rest of the season.

"He's certainly somebody that's going to play for us this year," Gibson said. "Definitely."
