De La Rosa recalled to add second lefty reliever

PHOENIX -- Wanting a second left-hander in the bullpen, the D-backs called up Eury De La Rosa from Triple-A Reno on Sunday to take the roster spot of David Hernandez, who was optioned following Saturday night's game.

Arriving at Chase Field just minutes before first pitch against the Mets, De La Rosa entered the game Sunday in the eighth with two outs and a runner on third, striking out Daniel Murphy, the only batter he faced.

Before the move, Joe Thatcher was the only southpaw in the D-backs bullpen, something that irked manager Kirk Gibson.

"We started the year with two lefties and that was the plan for the season," Gibson said. "We'd like to keep it this way now."

In his first career Major League stint, De La Rosa made two appearances for the D-backs in July, working 2 1/3 innings and retiring all seven batters he faced while striking out three. With Reno, the 23-year-old had a 5.26 ERA over 49 2/3 innings this season.

"He hasn't been in the big leagues much, but he's kind of been in that environment and he's held up well," Gibson said. "He's got a pretty good makeup."
