D-backs Name Dave Duncan Special Assistant to the GM/Pitching Consultant

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) announced Dave Duncan has joined the organization as a Special Assistant to the General Manager/Pitching Consultant and will report to Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Duncan, 68, will assist the Major League coaching staff's instruction of pitchers and catchers during Spring Training, evaluate the club's farm system and provide input on D-backs' prospective draft prospects.

Duncan served as pitching coach for a Major League-best 32 years with the Cleveland Indians (1980-81), Seattle Mariners (1982), Chicago White Sox (1983-86), Oakland A's (1986-95) and St. Louis Cardinals (1996-2011). Under his guidance, Duncan's pitching staffs finished in the Top 5 of their respective leagues in ERA 13 times, including leading the American League from 1988-90 and National League in 2005.

During his playing and coaching career, Duncan has worked with eight Cy Young Award winners: coaching LaMarr Hoyt (1983), Bob Welch (1990), Dennis Eckersley (1992) and Chris Carpenter (2005), and catching Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter in Oakland, and Jim Palmer and Mike Cuellar in Baltimore.

Duncan, who resides in Kimberling City, Mo., played 11 Major League seasons with the Kansas City A’s (1964, ’67), Oakland A’s (1968-72), Cleveland Indians (1973-74) and Baltimore Orioles (1975-76) and hit .214 in 929 career games. His two sons, Chris and Shelley, attended Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson and have combined to play 719 Major League games.
