D-backs name Mike Harkey Pitching Coach, Mel Stottlemyre Jr. Bullpen Coach

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) have named Mike Harkey as Pitching Coach and Mel Stottlemyre Jr. as Bullpen Coach, as announced by D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Harkey, 47, has served in various coaching positions in the past 14 seasons with the San Diego Padres (2000-05), Florida Marlins (2006), Chicago Cubs (2007) and New York Yankees' (2008-13) organizations. He most recently served as Joe Girardi's bullpen coach for the last 6 seasons.

During his tenure with New York, the Yankees' bullpen led the AL in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.49), wins (173), saves (279) and strikeouts (2,775), ranked second in opponent's batting average (.237) and third in ERA (3.56).

Harkey began his coaching career in the Padres' Minor League system, working as pitching coach with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga (2000), Single-A Fort Wayne (2001, '03), Single-A Lake Elsinore (2002, '04) and Double-A Mobile (2005). He then served as Girardi's bullpen coach with the Marlins in 2006 and pitching coach for Triple-A Iowa in 2007 before joining the Yankees.

In 131 career Major League games (104 starts) with the Cubs (1988-93), Colorado Rockies (1994), Oakland A's (1995), California Angels (1995) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1997), Harkey went 36-36 with a 4.49 ERA. He was selected by the Cubs in the first round (fourth overall) in the 1987 free agent draft.

Stottlemyre, 49, returns to Arizona's coaching staff where he served as pitching coach in 2009-10. He spent the previous 11 seasons in the D-backs' system as pitching coach at Short Season-A Yakima (2002), Single-A Lancaster (2003), Double-A El Paso (2004), Advanced Rookie Missoula (2005-06) and Minor League Pitching Coordinator (2007-09, '11-13).

Stottlemyre spent 6 Minor League seasons in the Houston Astros (1986-87) and Kansas City Royals' (1987-90) farm systems and went 25-24 with 24 saves a 3.50 ERA in 122 games (57 starts). He also went 0-1 with a 4.88 ERA in 13 games (2 starts) with the Royals in 1990.
