D-backs agree to terms with Eric Chavez


PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@dbacks) have agreed to terms with infielder Eric Chavez on a one-year contract, according to D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Chavez, 36, hit .281 (64-for-228) with 14 doubles, 9 home runs and 44 RBI in 80 games in his first season with Arizona in 2013. He led all Major League third basemen (min. 50 games) with a .993 fielding percentage, and batted .299 (20-for-67) with runners in scoring position.

Chavez, who resides in Paradise Valley, is a 6-time Gold Glove Award® winner (2001-06) and is tied with Buddy Bell and Robin Ventura for the fourth-most fielding honors at third base. He owns a career .970 fielding percentage at third, the fourth-best mark all-time (min. 1,000 games) behind Placido Palanco (.983), Mike Lowell (.974) and Brooks Robinson (.971).

The 2012 American League Silver Slugger Award-winner is a career .268 (1,460-for-5,449) hitter with 257 home runs and 894 RBI in 1,571 Major League games with the Oakland A's (1998-2010), New York Yankees (2011-12) and D-backs (2013). Chavez signed with Arizona as a free agent on December 8, 2012.

The D-backs' 40-man roster is now at 38.
