The D-backs have signed veteran first baseman and outfielder Shelley Duncan to a Minor League deal, according to the Arizona Republic.

Duncan, a Tucson, Ariz., native, played three seasons at the University of Arizona before being selected by the Yankees in the second round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft. The 34-year-old is also the son of Dave Duncan, Arizona's new special assistant to the general manager and former Cardinals pitching coach.

Duncan spent most of last season with Tampa Bay's Triple-A affiliate in Durham, where he hit .215 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs. He also appeared in 20 games with the Rays, hitting .182 with a pair of homers, while serving primarily as a designated hitter.

Prior to signing with the Rays last offseason, Duncan split his first six big league seasons between the Yankees and Indians, never playing more than 85 games in a single Major League season. He has a .226 lifetime average to go along with 43 home runs.
