D-backs avoid arbitration, agree to a one-year contract with Gerardo Parra

|

The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) have avoided arbitration and agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Gerardo Parra (@88_gparra), according to D-backs Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers.

Parra, 26, won his second NL Rawlings ® Gold Glove Award in 2013 as a right fielder, becoming the first player to win the outfield-specific award at separate positions (also 2011 in left). Parra, who set a club record with 17 outfield assists last season, was also named the league's Wilson Defensive Player of the Year.

Parra established career highs in home runs (10), doubles (43), runs scored (79) and hits (161) in his fifth season with Arizona in 2013, hitting .268 (161-for-601) with 48 RBI in 156 games. He led all outfielders with 41 defensive runs saved and a 31.1 ultimate zone rating (UZR). According to fangraphs.com, the 41 DRS were the most since 2002 and the 31.1 UZR was the second-highest since 2002 behind Alfonso Soriano's 33.2 in 2007.

The Venezuela native is a career .277 (623-for-2,250) hitter with 124 doubles, 33 home runs and 220 RBI in 683 games with the D-backs. Parra was signed by Arizona as a non-drafted free agent on Aug. 30, 2004.
