Jones, an Albuquerque, N.M., native, was 2-3 with a 2.50 ERA in nine games as a junior with the Big Red. He struck out 47 batters in 50 1/3 innings.
Jones's fastball can reach into the mid-90s and has a plus curveball, but he has trouble controlling it sometimes, according to his scouting report.
"Liked the body, liked the stuff," D-backs scouting director Ray Montgomery said of Jones, who was scouted by Mike Serbalik. "He might be a reliever in the end, but we think he has starter pitches and the ability to go out and start and pitch innings because he's kind of a fresher arm coming out of the Northeast."
Jones is the third pitcher the D-backs have taken through their first six picks.
