Stites, 24, was part of the return in the trade last July that sent Ian Kennedy to San Diego.
"We've got some young kids that are ready, knocking on the door," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "And we're going to start bringing those guys up and give them an opportunity to see what they're capable of doing and introducing them to this environment."
That likely means right-hander Jake Barrett, who was recently promoted from Double-A Mobile to Triple-A Reno, will see time in the big leagues sooner rather than later.
Gibson said when he said the team is going to start bringing up kids, he is at this point only referring to bullpen arms and not a wholesale youth movement.
