Evans earns second callup as D-backs option Spruill

SAN DIEGO -- The D-backs on Friday selected the contract of utility man Nick Evans from Triple-A Reno and optioned right-hander Zeke Spruill to Reno.

This is Evans' second stint with the D-backs this year after he appeared in eight games between May 28 and June 12.

Evans gives the D-backs some protection at first base as they don't have a true backup to Paul Goldschmidt with Eric Chavez on the disabled list.

Spruill was brought up from Reno on Wednesday after the D-backs played 14 innings Tuesday and depleted their pitching. Spruill threw four innings of relief Wednesday against the Indians.
