Owings thinks he initially hurt the shoulder when he dove and tried to avoid a tag by Giants catcher Hector Sanchez on June 20. He last appeared in a game on Wednesday, going 0-for-3 against the Indians.
D-backs manager Kirk Gibson seemed optimistic on Friday that Owings would be in the lineup Saturday, but now it appears Owings will not play Saturday or Sunday and then return to Phoenix to be examined by a doctor.
"It just doesn't seem like he's getting much better," Gibson said. "I don't think he's comfortable with it. He can play if we get into an emergency situation. Unless we get into a situation like that, he won't play."
It is Owings' non-throwing shoulder and it only bothers him when he swings the bat.
"It's been feeling better, but just taking swings it just kind of aggravates it a little bit," Owings said. "It's just not responding. I'm not really sure what happened."
