Owings will likely need a short rehabilitation assignment, but could be ready to return not long after he is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list.
Meanwhile, in other injury news, slugger Mark Trumbo, who is recovering from a stress fracture in his left foot, was scheduled to serve as the designated hitter in an Arizona League game Tuesday for the first time.
Gibson said if all goes well, Trumbo might be able to progress to Triple-A Reno early next week and having him back right after the All-Star Break is not out of the realm of possibility.
Right-hander Bronson Arroyo, who is on the DL with a sprained UCL in his right elbow, has not yet started throwing, but is expected to do so soon, Gibson said.
