PHOENIX -- With Paul Goldschmidt almost certainly out for the season with a fractured left hand, the D-backs are now looking to fill the biggest hole in their lineup and infield.

Manager Kirk Gibson did not rule out acquiring a first baseman, but with the non-waiver Trade Deadline already passed, the team's options are limited. For the time being, the D-backs will look to fill Goldschmidt's spot with players already in the organization.

On Saturday, Jordan Pacheco played first, and on Sunday, Mark Trumbo was penciled in at the position.

Trumbo, who missed more than two months of the season with a fractured left foot, has played left field for the D-backs this year, but when he was with the Angels, he played more games at first base than any other position.

"It feels pretty good," Trumbo said of playing first. "But you don't really know 'til you're in the actual game, but everything checked out fine yesterday."

Trumbo didn't say if he's going to be the primary first baseman going forward, but moving him to first opens a spot in the outfield for A.J. Pollock, who is looking to return after his rehab assignment.

Trumbo took ground balls at first before Saturday's game, and Goldschmidt was on the field with him during fielding warmups on Sunday. Gibson said he was comfortable with Trumbo moving to first even though he hasn't played there this season.

"His actions seem pretty smooth over there," Gibson said. "But it's going to be hard to replace Goldy, what he brought us over there with his consistency."

Said Pacheco: "'I think we're going to do it as a collective group. I think if we all put our talents together, I think we can come close to what he's done."
