Playing career

Spent six Major League seasons with the A's (1995-2000) and Devil Rays (2001) and made 70 appearances (60 starts), going 15-24 with a 4.85 ERA (190 ER in 352.1 IP). Missed the entire 1999 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Was Oakland's Opening Day starter in 1997 and made a career-high 22 starts. Pitched for the Cuban National Team from 1990-94, going 11-0 in international play…set the national team record with 20 strikeouts vs. Nicaragua in 1990. Selected by the A's in the frst round (ffth overall) in the 1995 June draft after arriving from Cuba that April.
